Planning Fire Alarm Work Across State Lines

For projects in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware or New Jersey, establish the review process for each property before combining the work into one contract. A provider’s service area does not establish jurisdictional approval or qualifications for a particular task.

Confirm the route to approval

Start with the exact address, building use and proposed changes. Ask the responsible state or local office which submissions, permits and inspections apply. Record the office, contact, written direction and the party responsible for follow-up.

Verify the provider for the assigned work

Ask who will perform design, installation, programming, testing and monitoring. Confirm the qualifications required for each role in that jurisdiction, plus access to the specific equipment and replacement parts. Review any subcontracted responsibilities explicitly.

Use one comparison sheet

  • Property and scope of work.
  • Reviewing authority and submission responsibility.
  • Existing equipment and unresolved assessment questions.
  • Installation and other-trade responsibilities.
  • Work windows, impairment coordination and restoration checks.
  • Acceptance records, training, recurring costs and service terms.

Keep the handover local

Store a distinct record set for each building, even if the same provider performs all work. Make sure local facilities staff can locate current reports and know whom to contact.
